THE FINAL DOCUMENT IN THE 1ST UWC DELIVERED TO THE ICELANDIC PRESIDENT

Posted: 20031214 | by: Jon Brunberg

It was an important moment in the UWC when the document from the first competition was handed over to the Icelandic President Mr Olafur Ragnar Grimsson on Oct 7 2003 at 11.30pm The delivery was made during a visit by Jon Brunberg to Reykjavik where he exhibited at the Hlemmur Gallery with among other things a presentation of the events so far in the Utopian World Championship. It took place at Mr. Grimsson’s residence located on the waterfront in a beautiful setting on the outskirts of Reykjavik. The stormy and chilling wind that accompanied the committee there was in sharp contrast to the warm reception received by the President and his staff. The fact that he agreed to see us on such short notice and his interest in this project only confirmed what Icelandic people say about their political representatives: that on Iceland it is never a long distance between the people and the power.

This was the first time we were able to meet one of the heads of state in the world face to face and it felt like an defining moment. A vision about a future world can of course exist only in the head of the visionary but isn’t it better if we are able to reach out to the people that have the power to change the course of world events? It will of course not change the world in a blow but it will hopefully work as a remainder for the people in power that they must not forget what they are there for, which is to create a better future, both for their people and for everyone else in the world. That, in our perspective can be seen as the definition of true civilisation.
